That’s how the ‘Situation Coach’ was born. It pleases me that I have heard this from family and friends, people I care deeply about, for what seems like a lifetime.
But it wasn’t until a trusted colleague who I “coached” through a stress situation found her resolution worked and then said to me,
“LouAnn, you know, you helped me so much and it was such a relief to talk to you because you were ‘right on.’ I’ve got so many clients that find themselves looking for help and support like you gave me. You really ought to share your gift with others.”
At that moment, I began to think seriously about what she was saying. Truly, I experience no greater sense of satisfaction than when helping someone find a solution to a trying situation—one that leaves them with a sense of empowerment, satisfaction and peace. Since it is specific situations I most often give direction and feedback about, it’s a perfect fit for ‘The Situation Coach.’

It’s no surprise. The ability to help someone find their own resolution to a problem or to be able to successfully help them navigate through to the other side of a challenging situation is tremendously rewarding and satisfying. Why? Because my years doing that very thing as a teacher, manager, friend, colleague and mother have been the most rewarding moments in each of those roles. Also, my own life has been and continues to be one of commitment to personal growth—the key to a life well lived. Personal growth is for our soul like blood is to our veins and like water is to life itself. It’s the essential oil that creates a path of insight and acquired wisdom. It’s what makes “being there” the most rewarding experience one can possibly have.
My desire and objective in my work with you and the work we do together is always going to be resolution that leads to peace of mind and a restful night’s sleep. It could be the difference between crazy, misdirected frenetic energy and focused, centered, controlled achievement that makes for a smooth running and more pleasurable life.
You may be an entrepreneur, a business woman, a teacher, a mother, a grandmother or all of these combined. Any or all of these hats create situations that are at times confusing, perplexing and packed with stress. It is stress that zeros in on our mental health—the one thing that is where our center is located and where our fitness begins. Health and fitness is as much about mental and emotional wellbeing as it is about our physical body. Each of us is about the ability to cope and to make good decisions affecting ourselves and families each and every day of the weeks, months and years. It’s about management of our lives.
One of the most frequently used metaphors is nonetheless the most tried and true and, I believe, the clearest illustration of the importance of self-care.
“Imagine you’re on an airplane flight from Los Angeles to New York. You’re traveling with your 2 year old daughter at warp speed. The plane flies into turbulence at 29,000 feet. The aircraft drops more than 1000 feet…instantly. The weather is getting worse. The oxygen masks drop down in front of you and over your daughter’s small head; the plane is rocking erratically from side to side. The pilot in the cockpit is grappling with the controls to get the aircraft stable. Immediately, you hear the instructions for emergency situations being played back in your head, ‘Put the oxygen mask on yourself first and next place the one hanging over your child on her.’ Never fully imagining you would ever have to do this, you do it automatically as you feel the cabin losing pressure and making it harder to breathe. Within seconds of getting your own mask over your face, you are able to calmly guide your daughter’s into its place. Now, both of you are in your own ‘safety zone.’ You can begin breathing in oxygen as the plane continues to rock and gradually gets through the treacherous storm. Soon you are safely on the ground because you stayed calm and took care of yourself first.”
Now let’s imagine for a minute that you didn’t follow that plan. Let’s imagine that you panicked. You grabbed your daughter’s mask but it slips away. Soon you AND your daughter are gasping for air. Since she is small, she can’t even reach the mask. You are getting weaker…so weak that you can’t get your arms over your head to pull the mask toward you. Within seconds you pass out. Result, your daughter does too. The oxygen level gets so low that she dies and you barely survive. An ending to a tragic situation that no parent ever wants and that could have ended in a completely satisfactory way if you had taken care of you first. You need to be the rock. To be that you have to know what to do which is why flight attendants take the time to instruct about emergency preparedness before the plane leaves the ground. As your Situation Coach, I will be your flight attendant. Before you take to the air and possibly crash and burn, let’s spend some free time together.
